nikkwhyte: Would the (theoretical) gravity well at the center of that collision not rip every thing in the galaxy off it's current path? Surely that would be the end of life as we know it.
Well, life on Earth will be completely eradicated by then anyway due to the increased brightness of the sun, causing all of its water to boil away. That being said, the path of the sun will definitely change and there is even a chance it will be ejected out of the new galaxy. The solar system itself will remain relatively unchanged.
If it were happening today, we would most likely be fine but our view of the night sky would be far superior considering Andromeda has about three times as many stars as the Milky Way.
